# Where do Scottish thread socks come from?

Why is it called Scottish thread? Contrary to what one might think, Scottish thread does not come from Scotland at all! It is named after the nationality of the man who invented the mercerization process, John Mercer, which allows for the production of this neat and shiny cotton thread, two characteristics specific to Scottish thread.

How are Scottish thread socks made? Scottish thread socks are knitted from a cotton thread that undergoes a very specific transformation process to produce socks of exceptional quality. First, after harvesting the cotton plants, the cotton fibers are twisted together to form a long, compact thread. Due to the texture of the fibers, it is common for the resulting thread to be uneven with fibers sticking out. The thread then undergoes mercerization, a process that removes the protruding cotton fibers to produce a neat and shiny thread of superior quality. This thread is then knitted on machines (Italian machines for our socks!) to create the famous mid-calf (short) Scottish thread socks.

Fun fact: The upper part of the sock (which goes up the leg) and covers the foot is knitted first, like a tube shape. The machine then stops to perform the linking of the sock, which connects the top and bottom of the sock at the toe. This special technique allows us to knit socks without a central seam at the toe, ensuring maximum comfort!

Where does the Scottish thread in our socks come from? Our Scottish thread socks are mainly knitted from premium quality thread sourced from Egypt. Why Egypt? Because it is in this country that the best cotton is grown, allowing for the production of Scottish thread of exceptional quality and thus mid-calf (short) Scottish thread socks that meet your expectations!

# When and how to wear Scottish thread socks?

Scottish thread socks are thin and lightweight: they can be worn all year round with all types of shoes! Note that Scottish thread does not provide much warmth: if you are sensitive to cold, we recommend wearing your Scottish thread socks in summer, autumn, and spring. In winter, opt instead for warm and insulating materials such as mid-calf wool socks or cashmere socks.

Our Scottish thread socks have ribs, a detail that adds an extra touch of elegance to your formal outfits and slightly dresses up your casual looks (they can also be worn with sneakers for a casual chic effect!).

They are slightly thicker than regular Scottish thread but still thin enough to fit into all your shoes.

# Caring for your Scottish thread socks

Since Scottish thread is a particular type of cotton, Scottish thread socks are quite easy to care for:

You can machine wash them on a normal cycle (30° and spin at 1200 rpm, for example);
For drying, it is ideal to lay them flat to maintain the shape of the socks, but you can also tumble dry them without any problem (cotton is not damaged by tumble drying!).

Note: the process used to mercerize Scottish thread makes the thread more resistant and enhances dye absorption. Mercerized Scottish thread socks will therefore keep their color like new even after several washes!

It is with this in mind that we have selected our Scottish thread producer from Egypt. Our geographically short production chain also reflects this commitment to minimizing our CO2 emissions by favoring a unique Cairo-Milan-Paris route.

With the same goal, we also create innovative ranges based on organic cotton, such as the non-compressing socks made of 85% organic cotton, which are softer, more flexible, and whose production is more mindful of its environmental impact. Moreover, all our partner Italian production factories are OEKO-TEX certified, and the dyes they apply to the threads are certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1.
